What is Kindly Care?
Kindly Care is a great source for hundreds of thoroughly vetted, background-checked, insured, and bonded professional caregivers who live in and around your area. We help you find and hire the most suitable, meticulously matched in-home caregivers for your loved ones.
The clients who come to Kindly Care on a daily basis are mostly interested in the massive savings they incur when getting their caregivers the Kindly Care way as against through traditional home care agencies. They also like the idea of employing a caregiver directly and having control over how she goes about her assigned tasks.
How Is Kindly Care Different from Traditional Home Care Agencies?
When families work with agencies, they outsource all aspects of care, including the selection of caregivers, training, scheduling, and supervising. While traditional agencies reduce the families’ workload, it comes at a price: you’re paying for the caregiver’s and their supervisor’s time, and the hourly rates can be as high as $25-35/hour, depending on location.
With Kindly Care, you employ your caregiver directly, and therefore you’re only paying for your caregiver’s time (resulting in roughly 30% lower cost compared to agency rates). To help you deal with the additional workload, we have developed a number of services and products that deliver an almost identical level of convenience as working with an agency, albeit at a much lower price.
How Much Does Kindly Care Cost?
The caregiver’s hourly rate is set by the client. Once you give us the price range you feel meets your care and budget needs, we introduce caregivers to you who are available to work in your loved one’s area and within that price range. You then negotiate the final hourly rate directly with the selected caregiver.
Our fee is determined as a percentage of the rate you negotiate with your caregiver. We charge a flat 15% fee for live-in shifts and a flat 20% fee for live-out shifts. Our fee includes all services related to vetting our caregivers (sourcing, background checks, interviews, insurance and fidelity bond), as well as compliance with all tax and labor law regulations (payroll, tax withholding and remittance, year-end tax paperwork, and other requirements).
What’s Included in Kindly Care’s Services?
Once you select the best caregiver for your loved one’s care, the rest of the hiring process is handled by Kindly Care, helping you meet all labor and tax law compliance requirements. By paying our flat fee, you benefit from all of the following services:
• Registration of the employer and employee with the state authorities
• Weekly payroll with tax withholding
• Paystubs for caregivers
• Quarterly remittance of payroll taxes to state and federal authorities
• Preparation of the Schedule H document for year-end tax filing
How Much Can You Save with Kindly Care Each Year?
Prices vary by region, but the savings are roughly the same. Let us say you hire one of our caregivers in San Francisco and pay her $15 an hour. Adding our 20% commission, and assuming that your payroll taxes are around 12% (most common case), she would cost you $19.80/hour. A home care agency in San Francisco would charge you approximately $27/hour for the same type of caregiver. Your saving thus comes to $7/hour.
Assuming you work with your caregiver 5 days a week for 8 hours a day, you would save $14,560 each year. Live-in clients achieve even higher savings – many have saved over $60,000/year by switching to Kindly Care.
What Are Some Typical Rates for Your Caregivers?
• Hourly caregivers in CA: $15-17/hour (with all taxes and fees included, most clients pay around $20/hour)
• Live-in caregivers in CA: minimum wage (with all taxes and fees included, this works out to $400-450/day)
• Hourly caregivers in TX: $9-11/hour (with all taxes and fees included, most clients pay around $14/hour)
• Live-in caregivers in TX: minimum wage (with all taxes and fees included, this works out to $150-180/day)
Do You Work with Long-Term Care Insurance Companies?
Yes, we do work with long-term care insurance companies, although the mechanics of reimbursements are slightly different. With traditional home care agencies, the insurer pays the agency directly. With Kindly Care, the client pays their caregiver and then gets reimbursed by their insurer, usually within a month.
The insurance requires periodic invoices together with daily/weekly care notes, which we provide. When you first start working with Kindly Care, we check your benefits with your insurer and let you know if they honor our policies (which they mostly do) and what daily amounts they will reimburse.
Does Medicare or Medicaid Cover Your Caregivers?
Regrettably, for Medicare, the answer is “no”. This is not specific to Kindly Care, but applies to the entire home care industry. Medicare does not reimburse for any long-term non-medical care at home.
While Medicaid (or Medi-Cal in California) does cover in-home non-medical care in some circumstances, getting those subsidies is tricky at best. For example, in California, all Medi-Cal funding for home care services is administered through a government-run organization called In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). This has specific requirements that prevent their clients from using Kindly Care as well as all traditional home care agencies. Other states may have similar limitations that prevent families from getting reimbursed for hiring domestic employees.
How Is Kindly Care Better Than Home Care Agencies?
Our main differentiator is that we are roughly 30% affordable than home care agencies. Another benefit is the continuity of care – the caregiver you hire on Kindly Care is exclusively available to you during your scheduled shifts, and you’ll never have someone else show up at your door unless you specifically ask for it. This cannot be said of all home care agencies – since they control their employees’ time, they have the ability to rotate their caregivers according to the needs of their business, which are not always aligned with your individual needs. With Kindly Care, you’re 100% in control of who you work with, and nobody is able to take away your caregiver from you.
How Is Kindly Care Better Than Craigslist or Online Marketplaces?
First and foremost, Kindly Care is safer. All of our caregivers are background checked, bonded and insured, and we also put a lot of effort into vetting all candidates (many of our clients tell us they value the introductory videos that we have for every one of our caregivers).
Second, we’re more convenient and provide all aspects of home care – sourcing, vetting, compliance and support – as an all-in-one package. Of all of the non-traditional home care service providers, Kindly Care is the most integrated service and takes the least amount of effort to get started.
Last but not least, organizing all of these services using stand-alone vendors would not only take time and effort, but would also be more expensive. For example, background checks cost around $50, and most families need several fill-in caregivers throughout a year. Add on top of that the cost of a household payroll that includes tax remittance and year-end tax paperwork – the market rate for these services is around $1,000/year. Finally, you should also consider adding the cost of insurance. At Kindly Care, this is all included in our flat fee.
Are There Any Downsides to Working with Kindly Care?
The caregivers sent to you by a home care agency are their employees, not yours. You therefore don’t have to worry about caregiver selection, tax withholdings, training, and care management. In short, everything is taken care of for you, whereas with Kindly Care, you’re the boss and as such your hands-on involvement will still be occasionally required. Our clients prefer to have some involvement from time to time than having to pay 30% more all the time.
