Hi, my name is Aaliyah. I live in Bear Oaks, CA and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my aunt suffers from multiple sclerosis and for a good eight or nine months she was in dire need of help and so I went to her home and assisted her with every task of everyday living and I worked as her in-home care provider. And past that, I also worked with other family members. My aunt was my biggest client for a long time, and she had two children that I was assisting with as well, getting them to school and everything of that sort. So that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be that you need to show respect for your client or clients. That is the biggest tip that I could give out. Apart from that, just show courtesy and be as helpful as you can and make sure you're always watching what needs to be done and making sure that you're staying on top of the tasks and making sure that your client is happy with the work that you are providing them. Because the client is your customer and the customer is always right. You want to make sure that you're keeping them safe and happy and fed and in good health. And that's the advice I would give to a caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is the most recent one that I had, and her name was Ida. She was the sweetest person you could ever meet. She was sort of reminded me of my grandmother, and that's what made me love her even more. And just the respect that I received from her, the beautiful advice that I got from her. She repeated a lot of stories, but they were good stories and so I loved hearing them and really getting a glimpse of what her childhood and her life was before she had become ill. And her family was very sweet as well.
