Hi my name is Aaramie. I live in San Luis, CA. I've been a caregiver for four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I've always been very passionate about helping others. I had my first experience when I was 13 years old helping my 90 year old great-grandma with basic needs such as cooking, cleaning, getting dressed, and basic companionship. I then went on to get my Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. I then worked at a hospital for two years and then I went on to work in home health care where I helped a 90 year old man with basic household needs. I am now on my road to getting my nursing degree.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have a positive attitude and always be patient. I know at times the job can be frustrating and difficult, but you need to understand that you're making a huge impact on someone else's life, and it's not always easy for them to admit that they need help, and to stay positive and be patient will really help you in the most rewarding job you can possibly have.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
My most memorable client was a 90 year old man named Keith. He had severe arthritis and needs basic help around the house. Every morning, after I'd make him breakfast and do my household chores and go for a walk, we'd play a game of Scrabble. He told me this was his favorite part of his day because we were both very competitive and I was very smart at coming up with new words. My most memorable moment with him is when he bought a Scrabble dictionary just so I "couldn't cheat".
