Hi, my name is Adriana. I live in Santa Maria, CA and I have three years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother. She was really sick and she had a lot of complications and no other family member wanted to take care of her and I was very young and took care of her and she inspired me to help the elderly in need. And I'm a very compassionate person.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always listen to the family members on what they want and also listen to the client and reassure them that you are there for them and their family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Richard. He was a great man. He was in his 90s. He was always happy, always joyful, never was sad, and always had something to do. Even though he didn't have anything else to do in the day, he would find something to do, like, he was going outside, going to pick flowers in the garden, hearing the birds chirp, staring at the sky, looking around, saying, "Hi," waving to multiple people and very happy and joyful. And everybody, all loved him. He also worked at NASA and he was very proud of that. He has done a lot of good things in his lifetime and it just shows you, these people were somebody in their time and they need to be noticed. You got to be compassionate and sit there and understand and realize how this person lived their life. They had a good job and had things going for themselves, just like any one of us. And then you actually see, like, "Wow, you really did that. That is great." That was really something for me. Richard taught me to appreciate things more and how daily life is and I'll just never forget him. He was very great man.
