Hi, my name is Agnes. I live in Sacramento, CA and I've been working as a caregiver for a little over four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my family. I've learned to take care of the residents and my family, who are relatives, my grandparents as well. So it brought me into the thought of learning to become a nurse. So I've just completed my CNA class and I pray to further my education and become a registered nurse.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you have to have the passion to work as a caregiver for others, if you're working to take care of other people besides your family, because it is so natural to love your family or your relatives who are related to who, but in this workforce you're caring for other people who are not your relatives, or your friends, or families. So when you have that passion within you, to love and to care for others and to further your career in the same industry or in the same workforce, you have to have the passion of taking care of either senior citizens or be in the children's or the pediatric area.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my first client, Mr. Bob. I took up the job to take care of him because I needed extra cash to help with my family. I did not know anything about caregiving, but when I took care of him and was able to learn to have the passion, to put someone else before me, who is not my relative, who is not my friend, but someone who is also a stranger but later on became a family to me.
