Hi, my name is Alanna. I'm from Ridgeland, SC and I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my father. I lost him four years ago, May 24th and he has inspired me to not only take care of somebody who I love, but as well as be that support for someone in their family. I have also done EMS but prior to the home healthcare, and that also opened the door to why I wanted to accelerate and to succeed in stepping stones with helping others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, not only love yourself but love others. Showing that you care and be supportive, a new family is what they're really looking for. I've learned that not even taking 10 minutes of my time brighten somebody else's day. It takes a lot of stress off the family and doing what I love to do and caring for others.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is James. When I first worked with the home agency I was working with, he was really upset and picky about who he had as an aide. When I went to James' house, at first I was really nervous but when I opened the door and saw his face, I knew that he liked me just by smiling at me and saying that he knew that I would be another daughter to him. It meant so much. I'll never forget him. He was so loving, caring.
