Hi, my name is Alvin. I live in Brentwood, CA I have a work history of 5 to 6 years as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a passion for helping people. Being able to help those in need and doesn't have the opportunity to do things for themselves is very, very helpful. Also, I'm trying to go to med school. I'm a pre-med student, so being a caregiver, to me, is the first step to becoming a successful doctor or a successful medical person. So that's why I really want to start with a caregiver career, rather than jump into a medical career that I've never experienced taking care of older people or a person that's in need of my services.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be passionate, be caring, and be patient. As a caregiver, you have to be really efficient at it. Because you have to remember, the people you are taking care of really depend on you. They need your help. Without you, they wont be able to meet the daily requirements of their needs. So you have to be ready for your patient. Also, make sure your surrounding is safe. Make sure your patient is safe. Always try to keep your patient in the best environment possible.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I would never forget is Doctor X. He is a very, very passionate person. I took care of him for several years, and not a day that he ever got mad at me. He never used any swear words around me. We became best buddies. We are friends, and we still are up to this time - oh, yes - we're still friends. I have a mutual respect for him, and he has the same for me. I was always on time and I was reliable. Whenever he needed me, I was there for him. And through that, we worked our way up and he came from being a client to becoming like a grandfather to me.
