Hi! My name is Amanda. I've been a caregiver for over 10 years and I live in Oakdale, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother. When I was younger, she was put into a care home after she had a heart attack and stroke. She was not given the care that we thought was the best for her, so I went to school to learn how to take care of her, so that she could come home and live her last days with her family and be happy.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to have patients. Every patient that you take care of has different needs, and has different things that they have experienced throughout their life, that makes them the way that they are. You have to be slow to react and have a lot of compassion. As long as you can be understanding, and patient, you will be able to do the job to your best ability.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jane. She was so sweet and compassionate. And every day, even though she had dementia and Alzheimers, it was a brand new day for her. She acted like she was seeing me for the first time, and she would get excited to have someone to talk to and explain her years when she was younger.
