Hi, my name is Amber. I live in Compton, CA. I've been a caregiver for nine years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I went into working with mentally challenged adults in their homes in the state of Nevada. I then became a personal caregiver in 2007 and it inspired me to go out and help more elderly. I believe that they have wisdom and they can help us a lot more than we can help them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, when you become a caregiver, make sure you're doing it from your heart and not just for a paycheck because it will take you a lot further if it's something that's coming from the heart versus just looking and waiting for money to come in.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was Anna. I remember a time when her daughter and I was trying to open a crib for her grandchild. We struggled for like 30 minutes and all I could just see when I turned around was her laughing and smiling and just having a good time because we couldn't open the crib for the baby and it really warmed my heart because she was able to smile and laugh with so much joy on her face even though she was going through her final stages of life.
