Hi, my name is Amber. I live in Houston, TX and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my great-grandmother was very ill and I helped her around the house and with her nursing. I started learning about a lot of things that make me want to become a caregiver. I've been working with elderly people for about two years now, going on three.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, always keep the client happy and clean. Keep talking to them. If they're unhappy, tell them a story, sing them a song or talk to them. Keep them active if they can, always show emotion and compassion towards them when they're feeling down or even when they're happy, make sure they stay happy and comfortable in their own home, never get angry with them and always keep a positive attitude. If you are upset, just walk away and just take a deep breath and then come back.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
My most memorable moment would be with Ms. Mary. She shows so much love and care towards me and my family. She gave us a lot of things, more of love. She made things for my son when I was pregnant. She would always be there for me if I needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk to. She always had an uplifting, happy spirit to make me smile even when you're upset or mad about something else. Always a positive person, even if you had a bad day or had a bad morning and you see her smile, you just make your day light up like a shining star. She was a wonderful person and I hate that I left her so soon, but other things happened but I will always remember her. She gave me a blanket for my son when he was a baby. I will never forget it.
