Hi my name is Andrea. I live in Anaheim,CA. I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my boyfriend was in an accident that completely disabled him of doing his basic needs. I became his caregiver. I've been his caregiver for three years already and I am currently in nursing school and doing my clinicals and I'm working with a lot of dementia patients. I really love helping people and care giving has really given me that experience and fulfillment of helping people and making sure that they're happy with themselves and they're satisfied with what they have in life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have a lot of patience. Patience is a key to wanting to help people because even when they may not want the help, they're going to need it eventually. Giving through the help and you being there is going to help them so much more.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget will be Ms. Lorraine. When I first started working with her, the caregivers in the family would warn me to watch out for her to be very straight forward with her because she was very rude and she could be very mean at times. Throughout the shifts that I worked with her, the only thing I saw from her was kindness and friendliness. It was very nice. I had a really nice connection with her. So it sounded really odd that family and other caregivers would warn me to be careful with her because she was very rude. That is one patient that I will never forget.
