Hi, my name is Andrea. I live in San Diego, CA and I have been a caregiver for more than five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my father got really sick in 2008 and so, I cared for my dad for several years. And then my dad got better, and he was able to take care of himself. And then in 2013, I had the privilege of working with the Locke family. I was Mr. Locke's personal assistant/caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to take their time, pay attention to detail, and to do this job with the most love and understanding in their heart. Because the elderly do not know sometimes what they're doing or what they're saying, but you do. And that would be my advice.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Bill. My most memorable moment with Bill was when we would have lunch together, because it would be the only time that we really had just to engage with each other. We weren't distracted by a doctor or distracted by a pharmacist, distracted by something else. We were just together alone eating lunch together. And the conversations would just be so humorous and just so lively. He would talk to me about things in his past that really made him who he was today and his proud accomplishments. And for me, that is what made me happy because it made him happy. It made him happy to share those things that he was most proud of.
