Hi, my name is Andromaque. I live in Vallejo, CA. and I've been a caregiver for 21 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I like being a caregiver because I like to take care about the old people and then this is something like to help the poor ones. They don't have anybody or any family at home, to take good care of them. That's the reason.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to open your heart to work with someone disabled at home or in need of companion to be there with them because they are alone, they don't have anybody at home. You just need to open your heart to work with this person.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I remember a client I was working with. She's had so many caregivers with them. She doesn't like them. When I show up-- and then she said, "Oh, there is my lady" and then I said, "Why?" She said, "Yeah. I was waiting for someone I don't know, and someone, when I first time see this person I'll like." Anyway, I work with this person for a couple months. One day I was scheduled to work for her and then she opened the door and when I show up and I say, "Good morning. How are you?" she said, "I'm fine. I opened the door for you so when you come in, I didn't have to get up to open the door." And then she said to me, "You know, Andro? I really like you and I can remember the first day you show up at my house. You pulled your hair back you had a black bow in the back of your head and I'll never be able to forget that, my first day when I met you." This lady was 95 years old and she lives in an old house all by herself and then my heart opened for her and she really liked me to work for her. She never liked to get anybody else come in to work for her and my experience with her was good for me and my heart always opened to work for her. So ever since I've been going there, I loved to work for her. I was happy when I was there.
