Hi, my name is Angelica, and I live in San Francisco. And I have five years experience of caregiving, and I'm also certified nursing assistant.
How did you get into caregiving?
I was inspired to become a caregiver because when I was a child I lived with my grandma. And she took care of two elderly people at our home. And since then, I helped her out taking care of them, and they're two demented people. I'm very much pretty experienced with people who demented. And since then, I started going to school for nursing also. And since I'm a certified nursing assistant, I'm pretty much good at taking care of people with dementia or Alzheimer's, and I've been a caregiver with a lot of different people. And I like working with them, and I enjoy working with them. And so, me, working with other people just inspired me, but it's something I enjoy doing.
What advice would you give to a new caregiver?
My advice to new caregivers is that whenever you have a new client, you always have to know their personality and how they want things to be done. Because a lot of people, especially elderly, are very sensitive when it comes to the way they want things to be done. And a lot of caregivers' problem with clients are that sometimes they tend to tell the client what to do instead of asking how they want it to be done. And you get to know their personality and how they do things. It's easier for us caregivers to work for them, because not only will it make it easier for us, it'll make it easier for also the client and make it enjoyable for everybody.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The person that I would never forget working for is Madeline. She is a very good mother and a very good wife. She was married for 56 years. She told me her history about her marriage and she taught me a lot about life, about how to do things around the house. She gives me hope when it comes to love because of how their marriage was before. She would always tell me that, oh, I'll find someone like that, or she has inspired me inside me. She enjoys life. Even though she's 89 years old, she's still grooving and very joyful and fun to be around with. Makes me think that if you enjoy life it makes life more easier. You have this positive vibe that you spread out to people. Knowing her age, she's a little older, she's still full of life. She's just a really good person.
