Hi, my name is Annette from Derby, CT and I've been a caregiver for one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had to take care of my mom. Eventually, I had to put her into a nursing home, and I always took care of her no matter what. And as I seen how she had to be taken care of. And in the job that I was in, I was a manager/teller, I had older people come in as customers, needed help remembering what they needed to pay. Sometimes, they needed help and we became such good acquaintance.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, if this is really what you want to do, do enjoy taking care of other people, do enjoy making them laugh, enjoy just sitting there listening to stories they have to say, just being a friend. Making them smile, wanting to just take care of some daily activities with them, light housekeeping, just knowing that they're still cared for and they're important and alive. If that's what you would like, then you're good in wanting to become a caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, and I still laugh even while I'm cleaning my own home, is Carmela. And that was through my internship. She didn't speak much, but she knew who I was. And she would just laugh and laugh and laugh, and looked at me and opened her eyes wide open and only to look at me and just laugh, and say, "Good," and always eat all her lunch when I was there. And when she heard my voice, she would look around and start laughing. And others would say, "There she is. There's Annette." And Carmela would never leave my life because it was always such a joy to hear her laugh.
