Hi. My name is Annette. I live in Sylmar, CA and I have 10 plus years as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because it was my first opportunity after high school. I was very impressed with the kind of support that was given to members. I was a day program director, handled all aspects of a day program setting, also a manager in a supported living home with an autistic male, who I became very close with.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be very patient. Treat the person as if it were your own family member. Always smile. Always offer your attention, and let them speak because that is the main focus - that they do not use their identity.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is John. He was an older male, very happy and cheerful. His wife, he would always tell me stories about her. He also wanted me to sit by him just to watch TV and read him stories. He was very into World War II. He was very pleased to have me there and always requested me, even on my time off.
