Hi, my name is April. I live in Columbus, GA. I have been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because once I finished high school, my mother, she has always worked as a caregiver. And I always looked up to my mother. So, once I graduated high school, I stepped into the field of being a CNA. And from there, it just continued. I began to take care of my grandmother. And from there, I just continued to get jobs as a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be always, always be polite, be respectful, speak clearly so they can hear you, and always, always be open to understand them. Never go in trying to make them do something that they don't want to do. Always let them have their opinion.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client that I had right before I attended my anniversary trip to Hawaii. Me and her would take walks. We would go to her old house because she stayed in the facility, so I would take her to her old house, let her go and reminisce and act as if she was cleaning up. We would take her dog with her so he could run around outside. And it was just amazing to see how she missed being at home. And I will never forget her.
