Hi, my name is April. I live in San Jose, CA and I've been a caregiver for 7 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver ever since I started taking care of my grandmother who was legally blind at that time. I was in my twenties up to my thirties I took care of her. She lived with us for those years and now she's passed away. I feel the need to take care of the elderly and to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to take care of your client as much as possible. Make them feel loved. Be compassionate towards them because they're weak and they may have a lot of physical disabilities because of their old age. I feel that we should show them as much respect as we can.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is the one I used to take care of at church. She would always have a hard time opening doors to go to the bathroom so every time she would need to use the bathroom, I would open the door for her and help her out, in and out of the bathroom. She always told me how much she appreciates what I do for her even through it's a simple act of kindness. I believe that those simple acts of kindness may appear small, but it may be a big thing for others.
