Hi! My name is Araceli. I live in Amityville, CA, and I've been a caregiver for over 15 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because at the age of 10, my mother was a housekeeper for the elderly, and I would, sometimes, during the summer, go with her. And I would be with the clients, and I would read to them, and I would just have conversations with them. And, I really enjoyed their company, and they enjoyed my company. And, so I just really liked being with the elderly, and I just came to love being around them and with them. And, so I've done caregiving ever since I turned 18, and I have been doing caregiving for a long time now. And I love and enjoy what I do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new a caregiver would be, to be caring and warm to the client, to be patient, understanding, and just to tend to their needs, as needed, and to make them feel comfortable. And just to be there as a friend, in a way, and just to be loving, and caring, and understanding, and patient most of all.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget is a neighbor of mine that was 93-years old. And I would walk down the street, and I would see her at her window. I knew that she lived alone, and her daughter would come by to visit her every other day or three times a week. But she would always be alone. And one time, she came out her door, and I was walking by, and I just started to conversate with her. And, she told me that she needed a caregiver, and that her daughter was looking for someone, and that she had seen me pass by, and that she thought that I seemed like a nice person. And, so she decided to come outside and talk to me, and so she was a very loving, sweet lady, and was one of my favorite clients. I worked for her for over two years. And she was a hospice client, so she passed away. She passed away while I was with her. Her daughter had just left like about five minutes before she passed away. And, yeah, for that and for many other reasons, Diane, she is a client that I will never forget.
