Hello, my name is Arlena. I live in Long Beach, CA, and I've been a caregiver for 4 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother, who had Alzheimer's. I started to understand her illness and understand how to care for her, and it made me just want to care for other people who had Alzheimer's and other illnesses that they were dealing with.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have a lot of patience. Being a caregiver can be very hard at times, but you have to have a lot of patience and love, and be a genuine person when you care for elders.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is this one lady named Doris. She was battling cancer and just being able to be there for her meant a lot to me. She was at a vulnerable stage and very angry, and trying to deal with the fact that the cancer was taking over her. But me being there for her and coming by and just listening to her stories and providing companionship made a lot of difference for her, and that made me feel a lot better
