Hi, my name is Arnita. I live in Los Angeles, CA. I've been a caregiver, Certified Nurse Assistant for nine years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver after my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. That's what made me go out and want to help other people. Once she passed away, that's when I went to school to get certified, and now I'm working to help take care of other people that need help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver is make sure this is something you want to do because these people out here are very sick, and they need someone to take care of them. If you don't have the passion and the patience to take care of anyone, this is not what you need. I am the one who has a lot of passion, love people, and love to help people.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I would never forget, when I first started my first job as CNA, I had this one patient. She was a very nice lady. I talked to her with respect, but she wouldn't open up to me. She never would speak to me. But as I came everyday, and I said, "Good Morning," I talked to her even though she didn't talk to me, I just continued talking to her, respected her, and asked her what she want, what she need. Days went by and weeks went by, she eventually opened up, and she started talking to me. She said, "You know what? I thank you for everything you have done for me." She said, "I never really like to open up to anyone, but you come here everyday, and you say good morning to me. You ask me how my day is. Even though I didn't respond to you, you continue asking me these questions. And it made me feel like you care for me." She said, "I appreciate everything you have done for me." And I told her, I appreciate working for her and ever since that day, we've been very good friends.
