Hi, my name is Artrina. I live in Pittsburg, CA. I have over 15 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have it in my heart to care for people, especially for the elderly. My grandma, I took care of her for 2 years plus. I've also worked at a skilled nursing facility and I love caring for the elderly
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to go in with an open heart, no judgement or anything. And to also make sure that the quality of life of our clients are always first and foremost, safety first. You also would have to always, always learn about your client, learn what they like, learn what they don't like, learn their triggers, and have compassion for them, and be like their second family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
One client I could remember is Mahalia, she was a 90-year-old lady from the south, says she can't walk. I worked with her for about three or four months. Within that three or four months she was walking and everything but I always noticed she talked about sweetwater cornbread. Sweetwater cornbread is kind of like hot water cornbread they make in the south. So I decided to make some hot water cornbread and within that time, I let her know that she has to walk in order to get it. And sure enough, we got physical therapy and everybody together and she walked to eat that cornbread.
