Hi! My name is Ashley. I have been a caregiver since the summer of last year. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have previous medical experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a deep passion for helping people. I have family members and friends that have sicknesses and disabilities, and I really wanted to find a way to help where I could. Coming from a background with medical experience and also getting started into nursing, I thought it would be the best way to get hands-on experience while doing something that I love.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient, to be communicative, always be able to talk to your patients, if you don't know something. It's not easy to be the way they used to be and feeling held back. Always put yourself in their shoes and always talk to them. Understand where they're coming from. Treat them as if they were your own family member.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Corteene, or Cortie for short. She was a pleasure to be around. Very feisty. She was tiny. She was 87 years old. Very independent. Always kept up with current events and what was going on with the world. She had broken her wrist while swimming in her complex, and she just wasn't able to do everything. It was her dominant hand, and I helped her out for as long as it took for her to recover.
