Hi, my name is Ashley Brown. I live in Richmond and I have been a caregiver for one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was living with my grandfather. He lived upstairs. He couldn't get around very much, so I would take him to his appointments, feed him, bathe him, wash his clothes, clean his house. That was just the everyday routine. I would take him to his doctor's appointments.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver is to be very kind and gentle with the patient. Also, take them for walks, make them feel young again and not just crowded in a house. Actually interact with them. Take them on exercises or do something positive each and every day so that they can feel comfortable.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jackson. He passed away at the end of August. He loved watching football, eating, going on walks, and he loved fruit. He loved to go outside and go to church every Sunday acting like nothing was wrong. He looked very well to where you couldn't know anything. Even when he was very, very sick during his last days, he was still smiling and happy.
