Hi, my name is Aubrey. I live in Pittsburg, CA and I've been doing caregiving for about seven years.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a passion for helping people. I first started doing it babysitting with children and being-- living in with someone. I did that for about two and a half years every day. After that, I slowly went into caregiving for my grandfather while he was terminally ill. I just find a passion-- I have a love for helping someone that can't help themselves, because what else are we here for other than to help one another and make life a little bit more easy?

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to make sure that you have patience, to make sure you're able to think and put yourself in someone else's shoes before feeling and reacting with your own emotions to a situation. Dealing with the elderly or even people of our own age or mentally disabled people, they're in a different place than us, and we have to understand that life may not be as easy as we may see it. So really taking the time to just sit back and understand someone and just do what is asked of you-- because it's not being asked for just no reason at all. It's being asked because this is something that they can't accomplish by themselves. So if you're going to get into caregiving, just make sure you have the heart for it. It's very important. It's the most vital thing.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never and have not forgotten is Adeline. Adeline made me fall in love with the career that I've chosen. I still to this day go and see her. This Christmas I actually-- it was the best thing I could have ever imagined. I went and gave her a haircut-- well, my best friend did. And she was able to just get in bed now that she's bedridden and get a haircut. And the look of relaxation that went across her head, it was the best thing that I could have ever asked for. It made me feel like that's what life is about, moments like that. I've never felt so good about myself. I love that woman with all of my heart. She's a gem.
