Hi, my name is Andrea. I live in La Puente, CA. I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my great grandmother. I started taking care of her before I went off to school to further my education and become a CNA, but she is the inspiration for it all.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be to have patience with their patients. To listen to their needs and not try to rush through as a routine. Just listen to them and see what they want or what they need. I'm not going to lie, it may take some time, but just have a little patience with them. And also to realize that no resident is the same. Not one person that you might have the privilege of taking care of is going to be the same as the last. So just listen to their needs and their concerns and work with them. That'll make your life a whole lot better.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Richard. Richard had a smile that will just light up your life. He always had something to him that whenever you seen him, it just made you feel better. He had a way of uplifting your spirit. I remember one time I took him to the gym. I don't know if it was something in the air that day, but it just looked like everyone wasn't happy, but a good day. I went to the gym with him, and he just had a way of lighting up the entire room. Everyone in that room flocked to him. Everyone was being cheerful and dancing around. He had a way of uplifting your spirits and bringing the energy in the room just sky-high. I miss him so much.
