Hello, my name is Aunielle. I live in American Canyon, CA and I have less than 1 year experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have been working as a massage therapist for around five years, and when I went on maternity leave with my second child, I decided that when I went back to work I wanted to be more involved in the healthcare field and more hands on. And I wanted to be able to help people more, so I started pursuing a degree in nursing which starts with my Certified Nursing Certificate that I just recently got, and I will be continuing with my education.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to focus on compassion and your relationship with your client before the task at hand. Making sure you have good rapport, making sure that their emotional needs are taken care of first before going through any other task that you have for the day to make sure that they feel comfortable with you, and that you have a strong relationship with your client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a man named John, who I'd met during my clinical hours at Hartwood Avenue Healthcare. He was a man who had been in some sort of residential care since he was 19 years old when he had been hit by a car when he was on his motorcycle. And I remember one day, after seeing him over the weeks, I sat down to feed him and I started to talk to him, and he started to open up to me and tell me his story. He told me how the accident had affected his entire life. This experience meant a lot to me because I could see that it meant so much to him that I was there to listen, and that I was there to talk to him and really hear what he had to say rather than just rushing him through his dinner and leaving. That was a very touching moment between both of us and it really gave me a sense of why I went into this field in the first place.
