Hi, my name is Barbara. I live in Sacramento, CA and I've been a caregiver for over 30 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy working with people, and I especially like working with people on a one-to-one basis. I like to be of help and support, and I've just always enjoyed it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always respect that person with dignity just as you would like to be treated if you were being taken care of.To listen, and to be responsive to their needs.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is Jean. She was an 84-year-old woman with dementia, although she was still very independent and wanted to live her own life and do her own thing. It was difficult for her, but we were able to get acquainted and connect and laugh with each other. We had some fun times. I took her out on the freeway because she liked to drive, and when we would start off on the freeway, she'd say, "Hit it!" I did have to watch my speed because she wanted me to go as fast as I could. Anyway, we had a fun time as I was working for her, and I enjoyed her very much.
