Hi, my name is Barbara. I live in Springfield, MA and I've been a caregiver for about three years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of family. My grandmother and my uncle found themselves in a situation where they both developed dementia and because of my close relationship with both of them I did decide to do that. It's something that I've loved to do ever since. I've been doing it for the last three years and I take pride in what I do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have a good heart, be kind and just really look at these individuals as if they were members of your own family. Treat them how you would want your own family to be treated and taken care of. Just listen, be a good listener, Sometimes they only want to be listened to, maybe tell a story and have a good little laugh. Also be respectful, treat them with dignity, treat them with respect, take pride in what you do and take pride in being the best person that you can be. The world needs more of that.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would definitely be Olipio. He was my uncle, God rest his soul. He was just such a joy, he really was such a mild-mannered man and just everybody knew him and from where he lived in his city like everybody had a story and it was always so warming when I would run into people and people would just ask me about him and how he was doing and tell me a story of how he had touched their life in some way.
