Hi, my name is Beatrice and I live in Ontario, CA. I've been doing caregiving for ten years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started with my grandma. She went into a nursing home, so I used go help out, and I was a volunteer there. I knew that I enjoyed doing that, helping people, watching over elderly people and play games with them, keep them busy. Then I became my mother's caregiver. She's been in bed for five years. That's the reason I started, because I enjoy doing this.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be patient, to be loving, to be understanding, to be willing to help them and just be ready whenever they need something. Just make them happy.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
Client that I will never forget is Stella. I worked with her for one year. She used to be ready for me to go get her out of bed, take a shower, put her in the wheelchair, take her to breakfast. She used to just laugh at me, talk. We always just talked and we got a really good bond being together. She didn't want to take baths. After I started watching her, she loved taking baths. And I started getting her to do walkings. She didn't want to walk, so she started doing once-a-day walks, then two times, then three times. Her daughter was really impressed that she started walking with me that whole year I was with her. She passed away, but it was a good thing that we worked together, that I took care of Stella. She was a great person with good personality. We had good laughs.
