Hi. My name is Bernice. I live in San Diego, CA, and I have been a caregiver for 23 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I saw the need of elderly care in our church, in our town, and as a minister's wife, I started an elderly ministry which helped our elderly with housekeeping, and personal care, and chores around the house, also errands and doctors appointments. And I loved it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be patient, to be sensible to people's needs as many people's needs are different than others. For example, a dementia patient has more needs than other people that don't have a dementia situation. A dementia patient touching gently helps, and you need to be a little bit patient or a lot patient and be sensible to everybody's needs as they are all different.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is the one I held under my arms as her head rested on my chest as she was asking to be held as she passed away, giving her last breath. Making her comfortable and at ease and safe gave me a great satisfaction which I will never forget. This is my memorable client. One that I helped and was with her till her last breath.
