Hi, my name is Bertha Montes, and I live in San Leandro. I have been a caregiver for less than a year, but I was working as a medical assistant for seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like making a difference in people's lives, and I like being able to help someone that is unable to do the things by themselves. I enjoy assisting other people to have a better quality of life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always pay attention to the signs. Always to listen to your customer, treat them like family. And remember that one day we're going to need the help for ourself, so then we need to treat people the way that we want to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is a client that was in a nursing home. She was always grumpy, and always looked she was mad. Even the people that worked at the facility would always say that she gets moody, and she gets mad, and she starts yelling at everybody. But when I went to her, and I was sitting with her, calmly talking to her - even though she wasn't responding, I was still talking to her - she never screamed at me. She was always happy to see me. And every time that she would see me she would be smiling. And she would always tell me to come to her. She would make minimum conversation with me, but I would still keep on talking to her
