Hi my name is Brandee and I live in Palmdale, CA. I've been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was a little girl, my nana, which is my grandmother, my mom's mother, was a respiratory therapist. She worked at Children's Hospital, and she worked the evening shift. Every morning when she got off she came home and shared her stories of her night on the job with me. I was fascinated with it all the way up until I became an adult, which I became a EKG technician at a hospital and experienced many different types of patients from all different types of walks of life. Different illnesses and elements and I truly was more inspired by doing that job in the hospital and then my great-grandmother became sick. She had a stroke and she was bed-ridden, and myself among other family members helped care for her which really ignited my passion for the healthcare industry.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, make sure this is definitely something you have a passion for and you're not just doing to get a quick fix for cash. Have patience and always take into consideration what your patient may be going through.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Miss Mary, and that's because I was doing my morning rounds as the EKG technician in the hospital I worked at, and when I walked into her room, as soon as I laid eyes on her, it was like I was looking into my great-grandmother's eyes. Same face, same nose, same exact face, and I felt the same presence that I felt radiating off of my great-grandmother from her. I did proceed to do her EKG. We talked a little bit and she was just a great joy and she brought such a warm feeling to my heart.
