How did you get into caregiving?
The person who inspired me to become a caregiver was my aunt. How she has inspired me to become a caregiver is also by being an RN. I am also aspiring to be an RN myself. I actually only have one more semester until I complete my prereqs to go ahead and start looking for RN programs!
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
For all the people that I care for, the first person that comes to mind is Cynthia. With Cynthia, however, on the first start off of us meeting it was kind of rocky, but with over time we developed a great friendship relationship, companionship. One thing that I won't forget about her, is a time when she actually started introducing people as, me to people as her actual family member. So it made me feel really, really special to be a part of Cynthia's life at the moment. What I admired most about Cynthia was her generosity, the way she felt and cared for others.
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
One of my proudest moments as a caregiver is when I started working for a particular client. She wasn't the best client to get along with, especially because of the living conditions that she lived in. But after a while of working with such a caregiver like myself, I was able to get her up and running and out and back out there enjoying life. So that was very, very special for me as a caregiver knowing that I can get out there and change someone's way of thinking and just getting back to being who they are
Are there any caregiving tips you can share?
One piece of advice for a new caregiver would be to always be sure to make sure that the client is maintaining their independence. Making sure that they feel like they can carry on in the real world like everyone else.
