Hello, my name is Brea Cook, and I live in Vallejo, California. I have been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver starting out helping my grandmother with my grandfather. And what had got me into it was me helping him when he was really, really sick. I just love what I do, taking care of others and just lending a helping hand. I have my CPR BLS card, and I also have my first aid certificate.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is that you have to have patience. You have to have your communication together, work as a team, be professional, and come to work every day with a smile on your face. Greet everyone. Make sure that you're on your best behavior. Keep any negativity that you have, at home. Come in with a positive spirit and just do your best at what you can do. Do your best with what you've experienced at other places. And, like I said before, work as a team and everything will be all right.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget-- she was a sweetheart - a really, really nice person. She was very loving. She's not here anymore, but she was really, really sweet - very, very passionate, always on the go. We'd go on walks and go to her appointments, and she was just a sweetheart. And she loved staying in shape and eating healthy. She was always smiling. She was the sweetest lady I've ever met, and it broke my heart that she's not here no more. But she was such a sweetheart, and I will never forget her.
