Hi, my name is Brittany. I live in Los Angeles, CA. And I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver for many reasons. I love to care. I want to get into being a special need education teacher. But primarily, it was for my two year old cousin, Lucas. He currently has down syndrome, and right now, he's going through a battle of leukemia and going in and out of the hospital. And he's such an inspiration, seeing somebody so young, and I want to be able to help that person. And I've been helping him with caring, and just being able to create something positive out of things that can be seen as obstacles in life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be very patient with people and know that that's not easy for all of us to do. There's going to be very good days, and there's going to be days when there's need for improvement. And just understanding, and coming from a heart of generally wanting to care for somebody. And wanting the best for somebody else, is not something that you should do if you're concerned with being a selfish person or being very stubborn. You have to really let down your guard, and really be open to a lot of situations and circumstances of this person and their wellbeing. So, that's what I would recommend.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget his name was Jim. He was my grandfather. There is a special bond that we had. He was basically like my best friend. We did everything together. We did errands together. I would cook for him. I would do his clothes for him. I would do errands for him. We would sit and just watch TV. And all that he wanted to do was talk about their memories.
