Hi, my name is Brittney. I live in Tallahassee, FL and I have a year and five months in all experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because it's always been in my family. And my aunt has been doing it for 21 years. It's what I've always wanted to do. I didn't know it was that easy until I got on with Hopewell and they gave us the class. And ever since, I have been doing it. I've been enjoying it, meeting new people, dealing with different personalities, just getting to know the different things that I didn't know. And I think it's a great experience. I love doing it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, just go in with an open mind. And just know everything will be okay. Every day is not the same. Even with dealing with the same client for a year or so. Every mood is different. They don't have control over it. I feel if you spend more time with that person, you'll get to a point in understanding that they don't have control over their life. And we're there to help them to get back to, or try to get back to the way they used to be. It's not a guarantee but at least you know that they appreciate your help. They appreciate us coming in and helping them out, and making them smile. It may be just what they need sometimes. Because you need someone just to come in and just talk to them or help them out a little bit.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jane. The simple fact is I been with her over a year now. And she is wonderful. I have seen her worst day. I have seen her good days. I have seen her in-between days. It's like one minute she can't do something. Next minute she's moving around fine. Or she remembers this. And she doesn't remember anything. I feel like she remembers me because I'm there with and for her.
