Hi, my name is Carita McKinley, I live in San Francisco and I've been a caregiver for over ten years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my Aunt was diagnosed with cancer when I was in middle-school and watching her, and helping her, through her illness really inspired me to want to become a caregiver and help others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to treat all clients with respect. Treat them as though they were your family members. Always let them know that you are interested in what they have to say. That you respect their personal space and that you're there to serve.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is a client that I had worked with at the last company I was working for, as a home care aid. She was 67 years old and she was a hobbyist. She danced just for fun and for most of her life she was very independent. So I had to help her do a lot of things and she felt really insecure, but I made sure that I let her know that it was okay and that I wanted her to be as independent as possible. We formed a really good relationship until she ended up going to the hospital after a really strenuous physical therapy.
