Hi, my name is Carmella. I live in Santa Paula, CA and I've been a caregiver for 28 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver since late '80s and I was looking for work and I ran into a facility that was hiring for Alzheimer's and that's how it all began. Then I started working with agencies and eventually I started doing private care and that's how I ended up being a caregiver. I enjoy helping the elderly. I understand them. I have a lot of compassion for them and therefore I think I am a great caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for another caregiver would be that you have to learn to understand their needs. You have to learn that someday you might be in the position that they are, in other words, you would need help, and you have to treat them with respect as if they were part of your family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, it was a couple. I took care of his wife first. She had passed away and then I continued to care for him. He was enjoyable, he was in his mid 90s, he enjoyed going out. He enjoyed all my family's company, even though he had his own family. He had his own children. He was a great person to work for and I will never forget him.
