Hi, my name is Carol. I live in Hayward, CA and I have 10 years experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of the wonderful relationship I had with my grandmother even as a little girl. I worked in offices for many years and always wanted to be a caregiver, and I started my career as a caregiver 10 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. I absolutely love being a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, I found the most important thing is to respect their dignity. As a caregiver, we're there to help them when they need help, and it's very important to respect their dignity and to step in when they do need help, and it's always very important to listen. I found those are two of the best tips that I found over my years of experience.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is, I was actually with her for six and a half years, and there are sometimes cultural differences, and you have to be very aware of that, very respectful, and I just learned so much from her. Some of our clients have a lot of history, and if you're respectful of their culture and very good at listening. I learned so much from her and she actually went through a lot of caregivers, but I found that you have to tune into their likes and dislikes and sometimes also be open to cultural differences.
