Hi! My name is Carolyn, and I live in Chowchilla, CA, and I've been a caregiver officially for four years, three with my parent and one in an assisted care facility.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I really enjoyed working with older people. As I began to get involved in that, I liked it so much that I began studying nursing. I went into pre-nursing in college. And then when my parents needed help, and I was helping them full time, I loved just making each day really special for them and just treating them with honor and respect and making each day just wonderful for them. So, I enjoyed doing that.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, number one, to just communicate love and respect the person that you're giving care to. And that involves listening to them, taking time, not being in too much of a hurry. Educate yourself on whatever difficulties they have, so that you can help them in the best way possible. And if you don't know what to do, ask for help.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was a dear lady, I'll name her Jane, and she wanted help after her shower. And she liked things done a certain way, and she would make sure you knew what that way was. And on my first day, she made sure I dried between her toes, and put on her lotion, and her perfume, and she just felt so special. I just loved spending time with her.
