Hi, my name is Carolyn. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have 15 years experience of caregiving.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love working with the elderly people. You can learn a lot from them and I'm a passionate person, I love what I do, and it's a good experience to have, working with the people that have a lot of life experiences.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you have to have a lot of patience. If you don't have patience this is not the career for you, because it takes a lot, especially for example, if you're working with someone with Alzheimer's, they repeat a lot of what they say. And you have to have a lot of patience and a lot of understanding that it's the illness, and you have to be compassionate, and a good listener, and just be there for them, and let them know that everything's going to be okay.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I remember the most that I will never forget, her name was Millie and she was 102 years old. And when I first met her she was in assisted living. And just knowing her, that she traveled throughout the world, she was married for 70 years to her husband. She had one daughter, she was a nurse, and just knowing her resilience of life, she was such a special person and I will never forget her generosity. She was just wonderful and I miss her so much.
