Hi, my name is Catherine and I live in Lemon Grove, CA. I've been a caregiver, on and off, for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver since elementary school when I was always interested in helping other people and we had a disaster preparedness course in eight grade and I always wanted to be the first one to be able to save a person or make a difference in the care of someone. I enjoy working with people and I enjoy being the one that makes a difference in the quality of care they get every day and making their life situation better.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would just be to be very patient and understanding and try to put yourself in the other person's situation to be able to have an understanding of what they may be feeling, whether it's happiness, anxiety or just stress. Just to do whatever you can to make them comfortable.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was Mary. She was a wonderful woman. We had lots of fun together. She had this long, black hair that she would always put up in a bob wig and I could always tease her about, "Where did all of your hair go?" Because I couldn't believe so much of it would fit up into that little wig of hers and she really enjoyed going to the swap meet and she would go out and pick all of these nice, little treasures of glassware and older things from different sites that we would go to. She made a wonderful display of them all in her own home in beautiful curio cabinets, never making them look like they were second hand at all. Everything she did was pickle everything in beat juice, so she had jars of pickled, purple things in her kitchen. It was really interesting but we just had a wonderful time and I really enjoyed working for her.
