Hi, my name is Catherine. I live in Redondo Beach, CA and I have been a caregiver for 20 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy helping other people. I used to take care of my Dad and look after my Grandma, and it's just something I like doing, and I feel I can do a lot for others, and it just makes me feel good to do so.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient and not worry about always being right, especially if you're dealing with a dementia patient. The main thing is to provide them comfort and to make them feel at ease. So you have to just be loving, and caring and do the best you can, and just be there for them, and make them feel safe and secure.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client I cared for before. We just became like family. I loved him so much, and he also did love me. I remember him turning around one day, and just giving me a big old hug, and saying, "Thank you so much for being here. I love you," and that just stayed with me forever.
