Hi, my name is Cecilia. I live in Pacoima, CA, and I've been a caregiver for 4 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I just wanted to be one. I was seeing how much my grandma and my grandpa needed their caregiver to take care of them, and that's when I knew that I wanted to do something to help them, and just anybody else who needed the help. So I became a caregiver because it came out of my heart to become one.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have a lot of patience and to do it not just for the money, but because it actually comes out of their heart to want to do it, because it's like any other job. If you don't love it, it's just going to be a drag to go to work every day. If you love person you're taking care of, it's just a lot easier. So my advice is be patient, and love your job.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Jodi. She is such a sweetheart. I love her so much. She loves me. She always shows it to me. Every time I'm with her she shows me how much she loves me, how much she appreciates me. She was a teacher, and she was used to her life being so easy to her, doing whatever she wanted. And now a few years ago she has Parkinson's disease, and she only depends on me to move her around, to do everything for her. And she is just a sweetheart. She showed me that no matter where life takes you, you have to move on, and you have to be happy. Her smile is priceless. I love her so much.
