Hi, my name is Cecily. I live in Ceres, CA and I've been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had a desire to care for people, but also with my loved ones. I took care of my father who has recently passed. He had cancer and he also had dementia. So I cared for him, and I also cared for my brother, Michael that also passed. He was on hemodialysis. I also became his conservator. And I also care for my son who is also on peritoneal dialysis as of now, and he's been on there for six years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient with who you're taking care of. Listen to them. Also, care. Have a heart to care for them because some people that you take care of like dementia, Alzheimer's, them being little kids like my father was. To have love and support.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my father. Just dealing with him with the cancer in his brain and dementia and Alzheimer's, I knew that the time spent with my father and taking care of him, those were memorable things. And I knew that I did it out of love. It really hurt me really bad when he passed. But that love and that support in anything that he needed, to his doctor's appointments and everything else. I'll never forget what I did and that's why I have a desire to go out there and help.
