Hi! My name is Chanel. I live in San Jose, CA, and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom started off as a CNA, and she is now an RN, and has been for 25 plus years. Also, my grandmother was taken care of by my sister, and I watched her go through the process with that, and it was something that I was interested in.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be that, the job is very enjoyable. You're going to have your good and bad days. We all do. Always be respectful to the client, whoever you are taking care of. It plays a big part in that person's life, and just as they would really want respect, they also like that. And also, always give them their dignity and let them be as independent as possible because that's something you don't want to take away from them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Julianne. Jennie was her nickname. One word I can describe her is amazing. This person had dementia, and she never let it get to her. On her bad days, it's like she always tried to pull through, and make every day count, and always left a good vibe with me, and with others.
