Hi, my name is Chanel. I've been a caregiver for 18 years and I live in Oakland, California.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver when my mom got sick and I wanted to make sure she got the best care.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to treat the person as if it was your mom or dad. Sometimes they really don't know what they're saying or doing when they're rude to you. So just always keep in mind, this could be your mom or your dad.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Ralph. He's 103 years old and his nephew came over and they started him on medical marijuana. I worked weekends. His nephew came over and brought him some marijuana. I was sitting in the room and maybe about 10, 15 minutes later his nephew left. Ralph started singing, "Whoa, I want to go back, ta, da, da duh, " some kind of song. I was just laughing. He kept calling my name, "Are you okay? Are you okay?" I'm like, "No, are you okay?".
