Hi, my name is Chante. I live in Sacramento, CA and I've been a caregiver for 18 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I've always loved helping people. I've always been a person that helped my neighbors out when I was younger with doing housework, and taking their groceries inside and putting them away for them, or helping with the gardening and stuff, because I've always liked helping older people, people who didn't have family around.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be patient. Always make sure you ask the patient what they would like you to do first or how they would like it to be done. Just make sure you always ask for their opinion about things and make sure they're included in whatever you're trying to do.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Betty Ann. She didn't have a lot of family. And she enjoyed seeing me every time I came in. She enjoyed our time together. She really, really enjoyed just simple companionship. She didn't really need a lot, but she just wanted to have someone there, and we really enjoyed each other's time. And it was nice making her feel wanted and filling that void for her.
