Hi, my name is Cheryl. I live in Antioch, CA and I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom had an aneurysm and she was bound to a wheelchair so I cared for her for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I really enjoy helping people and I love making people comfortable and so after caring for my mom, I decided to become a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be nurturing, be loving and give the best care as possible. Always be dependable and loving and make sure your client is always happy and cared for and do the best always.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is Joe. Joe had Parkinson's so I would take care of him five days a week. When I would arrive I would get him up so he could take a shower, then I would prepare breakfast. Also, I would groom him as in cutting his hair and beard. We would go out to lunch. He used to like to go out to lunch every day so we would go out, have lunch and we would come home. He would watch TV as I cleaned the house and get the laundry together. We would also go to the gym two or three times a week. He had a gym membership and sometimes he felt like going to the gym. He ended up going into a home. So, I cared for him for a couple of years and when I was leaving and on his last day to go to the home his wife was so grateful and thankful for the care that I had given him. She had hugged me and then was really emotional that she was so grateful and thankful for the way I cared for him and I was really thankful for them as well. He was really a great guy and his wife, and him, and his family was just really grateful and thankful of all the great care I had given him and I really enjoyed it.
